No wonder: some atheists’ minds are like skunk butts, according to Dr Coyne

May 30, 2011

Over at Planet of the Apes Ms. Faye Flam (!) (for real last name ?) on the archquestions of faith, science, mind and whatever. She interviewed atheists, religionists, scientists and sciantheists (atheiscientists?)-atheists that are scientists.

On a league of its own, Dr. Coynes’  remarkable opinion: “Many biologists are not religious, and few see any evidence that the human mind is any less a product of evolution than anything else, said Chicago’s Coyne. Other animals have traits that set them apart, he said. A skunk has a special ability to squirt a caustic-smelling chemical from its anal glands. Our special thing, in contrast, is intelligence, he said, and it came about through the same mechanism as the skunk’s odoriferous defense.”

So? Well, the last sentence is debatable at worst, if not right down false. Intelligence: defined how? All creatures are “intelligent”. To assume identical mechanisms for the ‘evolution” of the skunks’ gland and the evolution of  “intelligence” (human) is gratuitous.

So: I am happy that Coyne is happy to think that his mind and the skunks’ butt evolved supported by analogous mechanisms.

There you go lads: no wonder some have their heads up their arsses.

(the betise of common)Common sense

April 21, 2011

So many crazies these days. Crazy blogs, crazy news, crazy Trump, crazy Qadaffi,  Hitchens venting against HIS royals (however, the emphasis should have been the expense, the glamour, the offense of such waste, not the moral character of the Windsors), crazy S&P ratings,  reversed by a crazy Dow surge, crazy WSJ promoting Hayek doctrine for Egypt as a means to introduce capitalist democracy (there is no longer communism in the world, at least practically), crazy evolutionary scientists arguing against….religionists, ….crazy..crazy..all around us. And in most cases these people hold high their sense of …..common sense. Everybody else is nuts except them. The “liberals” lack common sense often argue the non-liberals. and so on.

“Common sense is the most fairly distributed thing in the world, for each one thinks he is so well-endowed with it that even those who are hardest to satisfy in all other matters are not in the habit of desiring more of it than they already have.” Rene Descartes

Rational betise? ja!

November 8, 2010

In rationally speaking blog (hosted by Dr MP)-it should be speaking, rationally,-Dr MP apologized to Dr J Coyne, the bombastic owner of why evolution is true blog. For alleged diatribes, insults and disqualifications-rather common elsewhere- and in the science blogosphere more abundant than not.

This is a strange affair, i.e.: the apologies, mutual. Both Coyne and Dr P think themselves as new truth prophets, unwilling to consider difference in unsettled questions. They go monkey when somebody dares contradicts their view- actually they do not publish au contraire comments. Coyne is so adamant that lectures specialists-some heavy hitters included-on other fields, dispenses advise in boots, spirits, movies, books, places to visit: insufferable, I wonder what his contribution to humankind been, other than pontificate in a number of subjects (maybe the analysis of released labeled drosophila in the Death valley experiment). It is peculiar, this protectors’ of the truth grail stance that evolution bloggers and philosophers pretending to educate the public-actually the public gets bored with it-that without showing any substantial contribution to the field itsef, evolution in this case, go on taking everybody else as anathema. Take Dr MP or Dennett, one of the self proclaimed horsemen of the apocalypse (sic) and his insistence in “empirical philosophy”, desperate to contribute something significant to evolution and in his case, consciousness or, take Dawkins for example, another self proclaimed horsemen, : two of his papers, one in pecking order and the other on how easily distracted bees are: arghhh, wtf? and the selfish gene and memes? Rather insoluble ideas that properly vulgarized got him a position as public science disseminator (Dawkins; he comes across as utterly soft, intellectually). In any case the mutual apologies are so the zeitgeist of these miserable times. Everyone goes in a rampage, apologizes and… finito. Not really. Look at Mel-iflous Gibson, innumerable tv hosts-and guests-that go in rampages of diatribes and apologies alternatively; scientists are not different. We are all the same but not equal: I predict there it will be a flood of these fake apologies.

Maybe a response to the rally for sanity? But it cant: the rally for sanity somehow was a bust. Completely. America is moronically lethargic

Halloween and Christmas

October 28, 2010

Im surprised that many of my atheists friends (of the non-vociferant clade) celebrate All-Hallows-Eve and Xtmas. I find this inconsistent and somehow irrational.

El Mono Jojoy (RIP or not, hopefully)

September 23, 2010

meanwhile the science educated class of bloggers foam about a PLoS paper suggesting a geophysical explanation (really ..?) for “parting” the Red Sea..(.Im serious) in Colombia, el mono jojoy, a notorious FARC mercenary was dronidized to eternity together with more than 60  of his soldier-killers  (sicarios). I mention these two facts in tandem to point to the  irrelevancy of blog-mostly scientific-commentary in its inability to engage and influence positive change elsewhere.  Life happens physically. …still and the comments, secular, religious or whatever should adress the pressing conditions which somehow are hidden to the ruling bloggheads. What is the importance of the geophysics of the parting of the red sea??Zilch. Instead Coyne, Hawks and a bunch of others dive unto the issue as it was a matter and a metter of life or death when actually el mono jojoy was. Scientists are too scared to comment on anything real. If it wasnt so tragic it would be hilarious. Which it is. Picture a group of scientists blasting at each other about the merits of peer review (which is a euphemism for gorup interest), the Red Sea parting, darwinius, creation, group selection, the f*&*^&ing  selfish gene and more, much more. How has science blogging increased understanding to solve  the tragedy of Colombia? or the tragedy of the “Pledge to america” (the GOP preposterous claim to recovery). It is a pertinent question; scientists, rather than engage in futile, inane and insane word wars (after the second comment is mosty insults)should move their energy towards solving inequality and inequity. Social chiasm is fundamentally a problem of justice and distribution of resources.   Science blogging has become a ridiculousy superflous veneer of …meaningless bs (for most)
