“We are in deep trouble”.

December 24, 2010

“People: we are in deep trouble”: Gene Lyons in Salon.com:” A deluded citizenry can’t effectively govern itself. Yet complacency and institutional cowardice causes “mainstream” media to play along with the fiction that Fox News is an ordinarily craven, celebrity-driven news organization”. More to the point: Take the fact that Newt, Palin, Huckabee and more, all presidential candidates potentially, are paid entertainers at foxnews. How can one conclude we are not in deep trouble if they dispense vitriol every week or so?
Evan Thompson in Newsweek, offers a rather starkly darkoverview of our current status as a nation (one under god??):” The irony is that the Internet and limitless TV channels once seemed to promise more truth. More information, from more sources, should have liberated the marketplace of ideas. Open, free, unfettered speech has usually served to expose the abuses of power. I assumed the same would be true when every citizen could become a journalist, and power could not be rendered unaccountable by secrecy. But it doesn’t seem to be working out that way. There is more noise and more opinion—but arguably not in the cause of truth. Untruths and gross distortions swirl around the Internet, supercharged by the cable-TV bias for hyperconflict”.. Thank you Thompson.

However, I feel the fox news/web/blog comment applies extensively to most US human endeavours 2010, capturing the zeitgeist of the year(s) we live in this backyard of the mexican hacienda. It applies to scientists and their science aboviously. Take Tom Junods’ ‘piece” in Esquire : “we dream in science:”….and this is how science will become like religion in all things except in its actuality“. Whoaa sailor!! (i love this expression, i wonder where it comes from; it is a late 40s song by Hank Thompson!1 and it written whoa sailor..rather silly and popeyesque)
Consider Ophrah trusting the intelligence of the american people not to vote for Palin-or Newt, or Huckabee or Rommney, for president: good luck and good night with that. Is Oprah really moronic (her book club bs is paramount)?. We elected Reagan, right?. Nixon, after three tries..we put up with Rove, what intelligence is she talking about??? maybe the intelligence to choose Murkoswki, what a force of nature; sock it you Miller.

Take Ms. Tracy Clark-Flory, *same Salon place than Mr Lyons* writing about “Hookers for Jesus”, a movement to support hookers (*running away from* pimps in Vegas). Good grief: is this real? yes painfully so. The citizenry’s dementia in USA running hammock. Hookers for Jesus…gasp…although I acknowledge the fact that the man (Jesus) had a soft spot for hookers. (if they looked like Mary Magdalene played by Barbara Hershey in Scorceses’ wild version of Christ last moments, I assume one has to sin). Thanks to Ms Clark-Flory for this fact-oid, albeit iconic.

…take Eric MacDonald, in flies on wheels *actually butterflies and wheels*.. revisionist rendition of contemporary history and declare that the enlightenment (gimme a break, please) wasnt such, in fact it fell short and the new atheism “movement” (rated one of the most overrated of the decade, for what ratings are worth) is picking up the fight of reason: “Despite its comprehensive overthrow by the Enlightenment – what Jonathan Israel calls “theology’s loss of hegemony in the eighteenth century” (Israel, Jonathan. Enlightenment Contested (Oxford: University Press, 2006), 68) – religion still has a disproportionate footprint in the public sphere, even in places where the Enlightenment originated and flourished. Counter-Enlightenment forces were very effective in preserving the structures of ecclesial power that existed in Europe and in societies whose majority populations derive from European immigration. Religious belief itself made successive accommodations to scientific discoveries and the liberal, democratic political arrangements that originated in foundational philosophical works of the Enlightenment”…disproportionate footprint?? yeah republicans have a very disproportionate footprint, so does foxnews, american football has a big footprint, pornography has huge footprint 9especially among republicnas)what else.?..anything one doesnt like is a ‘disproportionate footprint”? with allies like MacDonald we need a Better Enlightnement, not the sanctimonious whimpering of self designated guardians of reason and humankind like Mr MacDonald and others. I find that Mr MacDonalds (i wonder if his family has anything to do with burger king) comments mirror the attempts to recycle established ideas-even and including science-and metamorphose them in a ‘new’ kind of knowledge.

Take Sean Carroll, of the cosmic variance kind: he makes a pass at Leibniz..Leibniz for crissake, ( I bet he knows of him because Lee Smolin). Like MacDonalds pass at the enlightnement (should study more, Phillipp Blooms’ new book reviewed at the economist last month I think was very informed).

I find the citizenry-the gliteratti, the technorati-(think of castrati) a bunch that fails to acknowledge previous intellectual achivements and ideas and dont read history and dont learn a bit more of this place. The point being these guys, despite their credentials, speak off the cuff, from the hip, except they dont hit the targets. No targets really.

Take D 2 dismissing Maturana and Varela via someone else (reviewing Thompson and Cosmellis’ if I remember correctly). Bad move. Futurologists had predicted their (M&V) thinking will be more and more appreciated (how can knowledge be appreciated?). D2 makes a big mistake when pronounces M&V ideas (theories are not) just another way of telling the cell theory (sic). Or a gibberish “chemoton” kinda thing. bad move D2

Take Frontal Cortex lecturing about the ‘science of heroes” and the ‘science of charity”: a very slow f……………………Drop a curtain of decency over the stage. Last one out turn the lights off-once more.

Halloween and Christmas

October 28, 2010

Im surprised that many of my atheists friends (of the non-vociferant clade) celebrate All-Hallows-Eve and Xtmas. I find this inconsistent and somehow irrational.

The Pallium and the Palladium

September 28, 2010

Was reading  Deric Bownds blog regarding the evolutionary intricacies  and relationships of the worms’ pallium and the mammalian cortex. Havent read the paper yet, but the abstract is fascinating (last issue of Cell) and made 2 free associations.  1) I met Dr B post doc at Harvard boss E. Kravitz at Woods Hole this last summer. Great human.(s) !! (Dr Kravitz gave a beautiful lecture; he should be around 80? with dynamo energy and graciousness) and the second is that in the 80s I went dancing, invited by a gorgeous dutch flight attendant (she picked me up at bloomingdales’), to the Palladium (Manhattan, 14th st??). Drove up in  a limousine and in arrival were informed  it was gentlemens night. The outcome: we were about the only heterosexual couple in a sea of shirtless (even the bartender) mens’ couples. Quite strong for a teenager, but rewarding. Eveyone was definitely engaged physically: no prisoners. we had a lovely time.  I may have smoked a Pallmall-ium

Nada es verdad nada es mentira, todo depende del cristal con que se mira (Campoamor)

September 26, 2010

Or where truth is what it is measured. The status of truth is, for this value of alpha, i.e:  we earth, miserable. Let me explain myself: ” Evidence for spatial variation of the fine structure constant ” by John Webb, Julian King, Michael Murphy, Victor Flambaum, Bob Carswell, Matthew Bainbridge submitted to Physical Review Letters, 24th August 2010 (http://arxiv.org/abs/1008.3907) has opened a new -er-insight-in my case- to the strucure of the measurable universe and truth. The fundamental constants underlying the “Laws of Nature”  may not be the same elsewhere. Some property is changing that modifies the value of alpha.  Neat and astounding. However, I dont see this paper discussed in the US, neither at “comic variance” nor at motls-limbaughesc reference frame nor in the papers. I find it a bit shocking that consistently the press and the continental intellingentsia ignore ‘truth” when it is not locally generated. No pun intended. I have followed the group that did the work  (decade ago?) some of it done  with the chilean instalations -VTL-of  ESO,  and was wondering how was the story coming along  until this came up (the economist run a decent commentary). Someone remarked that more than one truth-that is local fine structure constants- could inevitably lead to different realities, that is different truths. Great. So much for the “laws of nature”. Veritas NoN sequitur esse rerum. Nature is no longer , well, actually it could NOT longer be that . So how  would Foucault feel? Truth no longer depends on the power structure that endorses it-the truth the knowledge. (I claim that the scientific establishment behaves in a focaulian manner, deconstructionism ?) How so? Ill tell how so: challenge the status quo and you are in for being accused of anything-from a moron to a creationist-  (funny that etymologically truth brings in the idea of faith-ful..)unless you are a well funded tenured or more than bright scientist. I read a guy that disqualified Sean B Carroll, Sean Carroll, EO Wilson, M. Nowak and Sloan Wilson the same week.  and HE IS  professor of good lineage and understanding. Lots of cojones notwithstanding.

Contrast the zero attention to this paper with  all the attention given to a NYT opinonator article advocating for the selective elimination of carnivores…gimme a f..ng break..  This reminds me of the suggestion to repopulate the heartland with megafauna. I mean, get with the program. Viva la verita.

Palin (the Jr) Stewart, Colbert et al.

September 21, 2010

Hope for (the) US: Colbert and Stewart are holding DC rallies on Oct 30. Long live the movement!! Gleck (Beck) trembles shivers and shudders or maybe not-while Palin the Jr dances away looking cheap. Some say is character some say is derangement. I say : sue your mother, however my sensibilities are different than most, but I would swear she was trying to look like her- mother.? Finally. Utter madness? I predict that this will be a turning point in our history. Showing-in a sex-n-ual manner-yourself on TV is a prolongation of cheerleading and being a comedian is a prolongation of high school lampooning but Now is when it gets “serious” and becomes mainstream. Stewart asked about the DADT repeal; are we run by a**holes? I say we are a**holes (mostly) run by a**holes (definitely)Forgot to mention the  highheelathon (sob)……or maybe this is the right way and  the end of history??

Hitler was a closet catholic and Darwin a closet racist: please, for f#$%ks’ sake, read the literature

September 20, 2010

O f all the nonsense and ranting  circulating regarding the Popes’ visit to UK, one surges on its own merit. The question whether Hitler was a catholic and whether Nazism is a catholic (christian) based  or related nightmare . This question has arisen due to the Pope’s recrimination of atheists, which of course let all the dogs loose across the pond (the british and americans funky way of naming the Atlantic). Hitler was a madman, and whatever he ever said or did should be contemplated in this respect. On a parallel universe,, a comment on Darwins’ view of ethnicities, in the Huffpost, has been a thing of contention since my school days. Clearly Darwin was anti-slavery, but his viewsregarding people of color (sic) is a spinier subject. All I can say, people has become so quick to scandalizewith their unfactual comments. Read the literature for f@#@$ks sake !!!!(whatever that means). Furthermore, there is a reflection on D’Souza deranged new book  about Barack Huseein at  Slate, which is one of the startling examples of misrepresentations this weekend. Add the opinionator NYT piece on getting rid of all carnivorous species and will have one of the craziest unfactual days of this year (please add O’Donells dabble of witchcraft, crazy chick). Oh dont forget NOT to pray for Mr Hitchens: I hope it helps him. (I mean NOT to pray). He is not well I understand so  let the Origin follow its course and  I will NOT pray for him……..I wish I could. Get well Mr Hitchens.

El papa…rararara

September 18, 2010

The title of this post is the punch line of a phenomenal joke: papa is a quechua word for potatoe and rararrara is the onamatopyeic of hurrah ( in spanish). People in the joke speak of the Pope unkowingly as a potato., so forth ( I forgot the joke’s script though). in any case, everyone is foaming for or against the Pope in Britain. Unless the anti-papa protests get big, the Pope has TKO the “atheists” ( why are atheists a “movement”, about what anyways? : I dont see an atheist solution to increased rates of poverty here). He beat them to the punch in particular due to the tepidity of atheist actions. I scanned the british press this morning: the Pope won. 5 to 1. In response to some friends; I DONT like this Pope, when he was elected there were many strong, unequivocal statements made mostly in the “Third World (sic) (according to the First World”) regarding the popes’ political stance, which sucks and it is inmoral and to which I dont adhere.  We have a leg to stand on. Im talking six years at least, ago. But wasnt even dreaming having a blog

Talk about a different kind of mentally ill people (MIP) 2010

January 14, 2010

We all have read or watched (have we?) the horribility of the earthquake in Haiti. Now we know why it happened: according, to Pat Robertson, yes THAT one, the Haitian people had made, a long time ago, a pact with the devil, hence it is time to pay up. Needless to say, he knows this from personal revelation. Is Marion Gordon”Pat”, crazy, MIP or just an obsessive compulsive manipulator of the thousands-millions-that follow the Christian Broadcasting Network, around the world?? Im afraid will never know, however, another MIP  manipulator, Rush Limbaugh, mentioned in passing that this is the “right catastrophe for Barack to build more support from”. He must be MIP or rather,  is he ‘evil”? are these men bad?  They dont speak from knwoledge; they “appeal” to something that I cant quite grasp, which lurks in the inner spaces of the worst of the human condition. There are plenty of comments on this today.

After a hiatus, a propos ways of knowing.

October 3, 2009

Been pondering and catching up, several are mad at me for my unwavering service to the true meaning of words: case in point “prediction”, but cranky old scientists argue: it is just semantics!! to what I answer: precisely!! old crank, the rest is commentary. Been reading all the excitement about the “human”: Ardi,  well at least, hominin, who has been the center of gravity, or levity, and mistery for 14 years. Most blogs and publications, sad to witness spew so much vitriol regarding the publications, 11 in science, a TV show this sunday and front pages in most of the world. Are scientists a nasty subset or are we all the same?

What happens when we open our eyes and find ourselves in a place…..
